As my hooligans get older it seems like I have a greater desire for them to experience some of the things that I did when I was their age. I want to break them away from their electronic devices and show them a world that I know they will love. We had a major snow day here in Utah yesterday. The snow started on Thursday and continued to dump throughout the day on Friday. It presented the perfect opportunity to dig out the old sled and take them for a ride. This isn't new to them of course. We have taken them sledding near our home much like I used to do when I was young, but this was the day for them to experience sledding exactly as I once did. My dad used to drag me on this very same sled on these very same roads behind his truck. I remember laughing and swerving from side to side and doing a ton of praying that I could get the sled to stop when the truck did so that I didn't meet that metal bumper with my face. As luck would have it that never happened, and all of my memories of sledding with my dad are good ones. It was something we did often since the snowplow didn't visit the roads that I lived on. Yesterday my hooligans experienced the same thing. It was funny to hear them talk about how foreign the sled looked to them in comparison to the ones they are used to using. They were a little fearful of it at first, but of course Doop had no problem volunteering to jump on board and his giggles were contagious as the girls listened from the back of the car. They were excited for their own turn which was much longer than the ones they are used to near our own home. Driving them up and down the long snow covered road brought back so many memories for me, and when we were through they went in the house and stuck their feet in front of the fire and talked about the fun that they had experienced. I couldn't help but smile as I drifted back and forth between my own memories and the one we were making together. I hope they get to experience this again. I hope that someday they can share this picture with their own children and describe to them what this antique object is. It might be old, but this sled has served it's purpose well.

I think this is wonderful! Beautiful shot. :)
I had one of those exact sleds...still do actually. Hubs keeps asking me to throw it out but I just can't part with it. I'm not sure it would even work, the rails are really rusted but I remember sledding with my mom down roads that you never could today since the plows come so fast. Beautiful photo too:)
We had a sled like that also. I have a lot of great memories, as well, surrounding our fun with that sled.
What a great adventure for them! I love the timelessness of this photo too. That sled should have a special place in your home!
